We were looking for the real Karelia without the crowds — and found it. The hosts drew us a map of hidden coves, and for three days we barely saw another soul. Coming back for New Year.

Our second summer in Mayak with the whole family. The kids fall asleep to the sound of water, the grown-ups — in the sauna after kayaking. Honest breakfasts, and we always drive home with a jar of local honey.
